Use of deadly force in Markeith Loyd’s arrest was justified

Officials have determined that four officers were justified when they used deadly force during double murder suspect Markeith Loyd’s arrest.

State Attorney Decision: State Attorney Phil Archer ruled that the actions of the Orlando police officers were lawful and justified under Florida’s self-defense and “Stand Your Ground” provisions. No criminal charges were filed against the officers.

Officers Involved: Sgt. James Parker, Sgt. Anthony Mongelluzzo, Officer Cedric Hinkles, and Officer Jonathan Cute.

During the apprehension and struggle, Loyd sustained severe facial injuries, including a broken nose and jaw, and lost vision in his left eye.

Justification Factors: Investigators noted that Loyd was a fugitive wanted for the murders of his pregnant ex-girlfriend Sade Dixon and Orlando Police Lt. Debra Clayton. Officers reported that Loyd ignored commands, resisted arrest, was wearing a bulletproof vest, and was believed to be armed, having previously stated that law enforcement would have to kill him.

Defense Response: Loyd’s defense team and representatives contested the findings, arguing that excessive force was used after he had stopped resisting. Loyd was later convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death.
