‘We’ve got quite a bit of blood down here’: Bodycam footage played during Taylor Schabusiness trial shows police finding man’s severed head in bucket
A jury in Wisconsin was shown body-worn camera footage of when police found a dead man’s head in a bucket as the murder and necrophilia trial of Taylor Denise Schabusiness began on Monday.
Shad Thyrion, 25, was killed and dismembered in his mother’s basement in February 2022. The state alleges the 25-year-old defendant took advantage of him during rough sex and choked him to death with a chain before later having sex with his corpse, otherwise violating the dead man’s body, and then cutting it into several pieces.
At least two of Thyrion’s body parts – his head and what police have euphemistically described as a “male organ” – were left for his mother, Tara Pakanich, and her boyfriend, Steve Hendricks, to find.
In a 911 call, Hendricks tells a dispatcher that his girlfriend “swears that she found the severed head of her son in the basement.”
In the body-worn camera footage shown in court, Pakanich, in very hushed tones, mentions something about a “severed head” to a responding member of the Green Bay Police Department.
“Did you both see this?” the officer asks the couple.
“I opened the towel,” Hendricks replied. “I picked up the towel and dropped it because I don’t know what the f––– it is, man. I have bad vision and she’s like: ‘Is that what I think it is?’ I don’t f––––– know.”
One of the officers stays with the couple while the other makes his way down the stairs into the basement on Stony Brook Lane.
After looking inside the bucket, the officer appears to call his partner over to look. The second officer responds with shock and disgust.
The first officer continues to look around the basement for several minutes – calling for multiple units of backup at least twice.
“If we could get more units sooner rather than later that would be appreciated,” the officer wearing the body camera says in the video played in court. “We’ve got quite a bit of blood down here.”
The criminal complaint against Schabusiness filed in Brown County goes into detail about what responding officers found that night.
Thyrion’s head had been severed from the neck and there was visual evidence of strangulation. Inside the bucket — besides the head — was the “male organ,” along with body fluid and two knives.
Other body parts were found in the basement in plastic shopping bags. Knives, including a carving knife and a bread knife, were found at the scene of the crime, police wrote. The victim’s upper torso was found in a storage tote, along with “several internal organs.”
After being arrested, the defendant allegedly admitted to blacking out while smoking methamphetamine – and later allegedly admitted to the opportunistic killing of Thyrion during typically rough sex the two lifelong friends frequently engaged in together.
Schabusiness said she and Thyrion would often use chains and strangulation techniques when they had sex. The chains were linked, silver, and looked like dog choke collars. She said this latest time they had sex, she “just went crazy, referring to strangling the victim.”
After what the defendant explained as a period of choking that lasted some three to five minutes, Thyrion eventually died and she said she played with his body for two to three hours.
“Schabusiness stated she sucked the victim’s penis, that she had a dildo that she put in the victim’s mouth, and then in the victim’s a––,” the criminal complaint alleges.
Prosecutors have charged her with murder in the first degree, mutilating a corpse, and sexual assault in the third degree. Prior to the start of her trial, Schabusiness had a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity entered by her former attorney – who was eventually allowed to quit the case after she attacked him in an infamous courtroom contretemps caught on camera.
In a defense motion, Schabusiness’ attorney argued that the sexual assault charge should be dropped because such a crime was factually and legally impossible due to Thyrion already being dead.
“The defense asserts and argues that it would be unlikely and almost impossible for any sexual assault to occur with how the dismembered body was found by law enforcement,” the motion reads. “The appendage (penis) was not attached to the body when it was found and the appendage was unable to function due to its condition.”
Taylor Schabusiness, 25, faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide, third-degree sexual assault, and mutilating a corpse related to the incident in the basement of a west-side house in Green Bay.
Schabusiness has been involved in a high-profile criminal case, and the trial proceedings are underway in Brown County Circuit Court.
Taylor Schabusiness, whose birth name is Taylor Denise Coronado, is a 25-year-old woman currently facing trial for heinous charges related to the killing and dismemberment of her friend, Shad Tyrion, in February 2022.
The police allege that during a drug-fueled sex act, she beheaded and mutilated Thyrion, creating a horrific scene reminiscent of a horror movie.
Earlier, a competency hearing was held, and a psychologist from the Wisconsin Forensic Unit testified that Schabusiness was fit to assist in her defense, a ruling that the prosecution agreed with.
However, her defense attorney disagreed, citing a different evaluation suggesting she could not assist in her defense.
The crime scene involving Taylor Schabusiness was discovered on February 23, 2022, at a residence on the 800 block of Stony Brook Lane in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Police responded to a call made by the victim’s mother, who had found her son’s severed head and “male organ” inside a bucket in the basement.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers uncovered a horrifying sight with the victim’s head found beneath a towel in the bucket. The criminal complaint stated that there was dried blood on a nearby mattress.
The investigation revealed that the victim had been murdered during a drug-fueled sex act, with Schabusiness admitting to strangling him with choke collars placed on their throats.
She felt her partner’s heartbeat as she cut off his oxygen until he died.
Schabusiness confessed to further disturbing actions, including playing with the corpse for several hours and dismembering the body using various blades.
She had planned to take all the body parts with her, but she only managed to put a leg/foot in her van and left the head behind. Schabusiness said she went “crazy” during the process and blacked out.
Police found additional human body parts, including legs, inside a crockpot box in Schabusiness’s van during their search.
She was arrested and charged with first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse, and third-degree sexual assault. If convicted, Schabusiness could face life in prison.
Judge Walsh considered various factors, including past evaluations and observations of Schabusiness’s behavior in court.
He concluded that she can assist in her defense and understands courtroom procedures and players.
The trial has experienced delays due to difficulties coordinating interviews with Schabusiness while in jail and her physical attack on her defense attorney during a previous court hearing in February.
The judge aims to have 16 people in the jury box, including four alternatives, for this murder trial.
Taylor Schabusiness Wants Meth-Fueled Confession of Sexually Assaulting a Decapitated Corpse Tossed
First Published: 12:18 PM PDT, June 1, 2023
Taylor Schabusiness and her attorney were in court on Wednesday after filing a motion to dismiss a sexual assault charge ahead of her upcoming murder trial.
The Wisconsin woman accused of murdering a man, sexually assaulting his corpse, and then dismembering his body is seeking to suppress statements she made to police in the wake of the alleged meth-fueled massacre.
Taylor Schabusiness and her attorney were in court on Wednesday after filing a motion to dismiss a sexual assault charge ahead of her upcoming murder trial.
The judge later ruled for the motion to be unsealed, providing harrowing new details about the attack and providing a glimpse into how Schabusiness might defend herself against that charge if the judge rules against the motion.
Schabusiness is charged with murder, mutilating a corpse and sexual assault. Her arrest came after she told police that she murdered Shad Thyrion, dismembered his body and sexually assaulted his corpse.
She has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect, and in the unsealed motion obtained by Inside Edition Digital claims she “blacked out” while confessing her alleged crimes to police.
TAYLOR SCHABUSINESS MOTION TO DISMISS
The defense argues that “[Thyrion] was not a person at the time of the alleged incident as [Thyrion] was deceased,” reads the motion. “The defense asserts that once the person is deceased, then they no longer are a person as defined under the jury instructions and statute.”
That motion also argues that the badly dismembered body would have made it impossible for Schabusiness to sexually assault Tyrion.
“The defense asserts and argues that it would be unlikely and almost impossible for any sexual assault to occur with how the dismembered body was found by law enforcement,” writes defense attorney Christopher Froelich in the motion first filed on May 24. “The appendage (penis) was not attached to the body when it was found and the appendage was unable to function due to its condition.”
The most interesting development however is the defense team’s bid to suppress the statements made by Schabusiness about the alleged assault.
“The defense argues that there is no evidence to support a sexual assault other than the defendant’s own statements when she was under the influence of meth and trazadone,” reads the motion. “Those statements are going to be the subject of a motion to suppress hearing.”
The motion circles back to this argument a second time, saying “the defendant’s alleged answers to questions are not reliable due to being under the influence of drugs.”
The state filed a response objecting to the defense’s motion, claiming that it is far too late into the proceedings for the defense team to seek dismissal of a charge in the case.
In that filing the prosecutor also took aim at the defense for the imagery included in the motion, which remains under seal despite the judge unsealing the rest of the document.
“The State is utterly at a loss why the defense felt it necessary to attach Exhibit C to this motion. It is inflammatory, irrelevant, unnecessary, and potentially violative of the crime victims’ rights to be treated with dignity, respect, courtesy, sensitivity, and fairness,'” writes Deputy District Attorney Caleb Saunders.
Looking ahead, the motion to suppress could have major implications in the case since Schabusiness also confessed to the murder and mutilation of Thyrion’s corpse in that same interview with police.
TAYLOR SCHABUSINESS CRIMINAL COMPLAINT
Schabusiness willingly spoke with police after her arrest and told officers she decapitated Thyrion, 25, during sex according to the complaint.
“At one point during the interview, Schabusiness stated she could feel the Victim’s heart beating still as she was choking him, so she kept pulling and choking him harder, but the Victim would not die and that he just kept ‘rebuilding into muscle,’” says the complaint.
Thyrion’s “face turned purple, blood was coming out of his mouth, but she did not stop.”
At that point, Schabusiness allegedly dismembered Thyrion’s lifeless body with knives she found in his kitchen.
She also allegedly told officers that she sexually assaulted his corpse.
“Schabusiness stated the plan was for her to bring all of the body parts with her but she got lazy and only ended up putting the leg/foot in the van and she forgot the head,” says the complaint.
The Green Bay Police Department began searching for the victim’s body parts, a task that Schabusiness allegedly found very amusing.
“Schabusiness responded that the police were going to have fun trying to find all of the organs,” wrote Caleb Saunders, assistant district attorney for Brown County, in the complaint.
The motion unsealed on Wednesday shares new details about the location of Thyrion’s body parts.
“There were apparently other alleged body parts found in a Jimmy Choo bag, alleged body parts in an Under Armour bag and in a Crock Pot box found in the Chrysler mini-van,” reads the motion. “The defendant apparently blacked out as she reported to police.”
schabusiness will next in appear in court on June 16, and her trial date has now been pushed back to late July court records show
More details
Taylor Denise Schabusiness also told the police that she continued having sex with Thyrion’s corpse “because she enjoyed it.” According to the police, “Schabusiness made the comment that at one point, she did get paranoid and lazy and that she thought it was the ‘dope’ that was making her paranoid.”
Additionally, Judge Thomas Walsh determined in May that Schabusiness is able to stand trial after she underwent two competence examinations. However, Quinn Jolly, the woman’s attorney, disagreed and insisted that her client was unfit to stand.
She stated: “She’s been psychiatrically hospitalized multiple times, she’s been diagnosed with bipolar and psychotic. This may have been one of her better days, however, I’m very surprised at the result of this report.”
Nevertheless, Matthew Seipel, a psychiatric specialist the court retained, thinks Schabusiness is competent to stand trial. He declared: “I reached the opinion to a reasonable degree of professional certainty that the defendant is competent to proceed in this case.”
Lastly, Schabusiness is still in jail with a $2 million (£1.6 million) bond.
Who was Shad Thyrion?
Thyrion, 24, had been a Howard-Suamico School District and Bay Port High School student from 2010 to 2015, according to district officials. He is not listed as a graduate of Bay Port.
His obituary, published Friday on the Green Bay Press-Gazette website, listed his parents as Tara Pakanich and Michael Thyrion and said he had worked with his father and grandfather at their family businesses.
“Shad enjoyed camping, games, and spending time with his family,” the obituary says. “He was a very kind and compassionate person who often thought of others before himself. A talented artist, he also enjoyed wood carving.”
His Facebook page shows Thyrion also was interested in music, with many of his posts linking to music videos. His profile says he was from Ashwaubenon.
A cousin of Thyrion’s mother started an online fundraiser to help the family “with housing arrangements, transportation and funeral expenses for sweet Shad.” As of Friday afternoon, the GoFundMe plea had raised $7,700 toward its $20,000 goal.
Who is Taylor Schabusiness?
Like Thyrion, Schabusiness attended Howard-Suamico schools but is not listed as having graduated from Bay Port. She is 24.
She has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse and third-degree sexual assault in Thyrion’s death and faces life in prison if convicted. Schabusiness was ordered held in the Brown County Jail on $2 million cash bail.
She has a previous criminal record, including a recent conviction for fleeing, eluding and obstructing a police officer. She had been sentenced to three months in jail on Jan. 4 with work-release privileges, according to online court records.
It’s unclear whether she was out of jail on work release at the time of Thyrion’s death Feb. 23.
Her listed address in the newest court filing is 1130 Moraine Way, Green Bay. A previous civil court case listed her with an address on Eastman Avenue, which is where police say they arrested her soon after discovering Thyrion’s decapitated head in his mother’s home.
In the civil case, she was ordered to pay the city of Green Bay and its insurer over $4,100on the same day she was arrested.
How did Schabusiness and Thyrion know each other?
The pair had been friends and were involved in a sexual relationship, according to Schabusiness’ statement to investigators.
What transpired before Thyrion was dismembered?
Some of the exact timing of what happened leading up to the discovery of Thyrion’s remains is unclear in the criminal complaint. According to the criminal complaint:
Schabusiness picked up Thyrion about 9:30 p.m. Feb. 21, the victim’s mother told police. Schabusiness said she, an unidentified friend and Thyrion got some drugs and went to the Eastman Avenue apartment, the complaint says, where all three smoked marijuana. Schabusiness and Thyrion smoked methamphetamine, she said. Her roommate left, and Schabusiness injected Thyrion and herself with trazodone, an antidepressant.
At some point, Schabusiness and Thyrion returned to his mother’s home and went into the basement. The two were there for all or much of Feb. 22, Thyrion’s mother said, but she was out of the house during the day on Feb. 22,
About five minutes after they went into the basement together, Thyrion got out two metal silver chains, one that he had around his neck and one he gave her, Schabusiness told police. She described the chains as “like a dog’s choke collar.” She said strangulation had been part of their sex acts in the past, the complaint says. He laid face down on the bed and Schabusiness said she went “crazy” and began to choke him with the chain and she did not stop even though he was coughing up blood and his face turned purple.
She told Green Bay Police Det. David Graf, “Ya, I liked it,” which he believed meant the strangulation, according to the criminal complaint.
Schabusiness said she continued choking him until he stopped breathing, the complaint says.
What happened next?
Schabusiness told police she first “played with the victim’s body for like two or three hours,” which led to the sexual assault charge. Then she used knives from the kitchen to decapitate and dismember Thyrion, planning to take all the body parts with her, “but she got lazy” and didn’t. Some body parts were discovered in the van and some in the basement, placed in plastic shopping bags, a cardboard box, a plastic bucket and a plastic storage container, the complaint says.
How was the killing discovered?
Thyrion’s mother said she was awakened by a storm door slamming between 2:30 and 3 a.m. Feb. 23 and she heard a vehicle. She got up, saw a light in the basement and went down there where she discovered a bucket with her son’s head in it, the complaint says.
Where was Schabusiness at this point?
She had left the house at some point. The criminal complaint is not specific as to when that happened.
Schabusiness was picked up that morning — no time is listed — at a home on Eastman Avenue, on the east side.
A police detective said in the criminal complaint that Schabusiness now lives with a roommate on Eastman Avenue. Her home address is listed as Moraine Way, in a neighborhood of condominiums on the city’s west side.
Did Schabusiness explain why Thyrion was killed?
Yes and no. Asked by Graf what happened, she said that “is a good question” because she claimed to have had blacked out while choking Thyrion. She said she regained consciousness before he was dead and before dismembering him, however, according to the complaint.
Then she admitted she and Thyrion were smoking a substance referred to by an obscene slang name, “the bitch,” but which Graf confirmed was methamphetamine.
She also made statements, according to the complaint, that indicated she had not planned to kill Thyrion before she started choking him.
“Schabusiness made the comment that she was ‘already this far’ so she just kept on, referring to choking the victim,” the complaint says, quoting Graf’s report.
“Schabusiness stated she enjoyed choking him and made comments to detectives asking if they knew what it was like to love something so much that you kill it,” the complaint says.
What happens next?
Schabusiness is due back in court at 2 p.m. March 22 for the rest of her initial appearance. She is being held in the Brown County Jail on $2 million bail.
What we don’t know yet
- Exactly how long Thyrion was dead before his remains were discovered.
- Why Schabusiness was free the day she was with Thyrion, despite her jail sentence on the obstruction charge. When officers approached her Feb. 23 and asked if she knew why they were there, “she stated something that sounded like, ‘Because of my warrant for my arrest,'” according to the criminal complaint.
- What motive Schabusiness might have had for killing Thyrion, or for dismembering his body, and what role drugs played in the crimes she’s accused of committing.
- Whether the details Schabusiness shared with investigators about Thyrion’s death and the activities leading up to it are accurate. However, one of the detectives is quoted in the complaint as saying that her statements were “consistent with officers’ findings during the search of the basement.”
