The Monster Inside The Church – The Notorious Peter Tobin

The horrific murder of a young Polish student inside a Glasgow church shocked all of Scotland and led to the capture of one of the most notorious serial killers the UK has ever known. Angelika Kluk, 23, was bludgeoned to death and stabbed many times by her perpetrator – but the crime at St Patrick’s Church in Anderston would eventually lead to the monster’s capture.

Following her disappearance, police discovered that the handyman was actually Tobin—a registered sex offender on the run. A thorough search of the church premises led to the discovery of her body hidden in an underground space beneath the floorboards near the confessional box.

The brutality and concealment of the crime suggested to investigators that this was not a first-time offense. Police launched a major UK-wide investigation named Operation Anagram to trace every address, vehicle, and alias Tobin had used throughout his life. This extensive work led police to a former property of his in Margate, where they excavated the garden and discovered the remains of two teenage girls who vanished in 1991:

    • Vicky Hamilton (15): Abducted in February 1991 from a bus stop in Bathgate.
    • Dinah McNicol (18): Abducted in August 1991 while hitchhiking home from a festival.

Tobin was convicted of all three murders and received multiple life sentences with a whole life order. He died in prison in October 2022 without ever confessing to any further crimes, though police strongly suspect he was responsible for many other unsolved murders.
